Funded by an interdisciplinary arts project of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, 2017. The artist and musician began corresponding upon realizing they were researching the transition to democracy in the late 1970s. Through foregrounding their dialog, they sought to frame the collaboration through their own subjectivities. More information follows.

SCRIPT: FRANCO IS STILL DEAD (SFISD) Dimensions Variable (00:14:16)

SFISD is part II of Daly's Madrid Trilogy GHOST TRANSMISSIONS.

A collaboration by artist Ann Burke Daly (New York, US) and musician-writer Álvaro Marcos (Madrid, ES). Produced as an atmospheric 4 channel video and 3 channel stereo sound installation Spring 2017. SCRIPT: FRANCO IS STILL DEAD (SFISD) is envisioned as an environment which embraces the audience, drawing them into an intimate cacoon-like and subtly disorienting non-linear, sensory, and filmic environment. The experience of the materiality of the sonic and filmic elements is central.

SFISD is composed of found, altered, and newly created sound and video segments including field recordings and real-time video shot in Madrid on location, and historic film and sonic documents. The collaboration began with an unlikely email correspondence when Daly heard a Franco era film clip sampled into Marcos' 2nd album with his Madrid based band Atención Tsunami. The space the work was initially created for installation in a wood and brick 45 foot x 65 foot two storied space. Dimensions Variable (00:14:16).

Esta instalación multicanal de sonido y vídeo se apoya en una proyección que se integra en la arquitectura del espacio en el que se presenta. Incluye discursos políticos, música y filmaciones de archivo, con su sonido original, a los que se añaden vídeos y textos específicos para la pieza. Las escenas de Script: Franco is Still Dead indagan en la presencia silenciosa de un pasado reprimido en la España contemporánea. El proyecto pretende contribuir al actual cuestionamiento del mitificado relato hegemónico de la transición española de la dictadura a la democracia tras la muerte de Francisco Franco en 1975. Reflexionando sobre sus silencios, sombras y ruidos de fondo y haciendo visibles temas que han permanecido enterrados pero siguen rondando a la sociedad española – como las fosas comunes y los antiguos centros de tortura no identificados – el trabajo pretende crear lo que el historiador francés Pierre Nora llamó “lugares de la memoria”. El proyecto también plantea preguntas sobre las relaciones entre la memoria, la historia, el poder, la justicia y la identidad, así como sobre las formas en que se construyen y se pueden resignificar las narrativas individuales, colectivas y nacionales.
