Conversationes y Espectros (ES)

Un proyecto interdisciplinario de instalación de video y sonido y installaciónes fotographicos, 2014-16. A través de fragmentos de conversación, video, sonido, escritura, transcripciones y fotos, este proyecto investigará la experiencia de la juventud durante la “transición”, entre la muerte de Franco hasta la democracia (1975-1978), y luego la “movida” española. El proyecto explorará los acuerdos políticos de la “transición,” el llamado “pacto de olvido,” un olvido tanto político como cultural, y sus efectos duraderos entre los ciudadanos quienes tácitamente cumplían con un acuerdo intergeneracional para evitar cuestiones sobre la violencia de la Guerra Civil y la erosión de los derechos civiles durante la dictadura.

La posición del forastero o “outsider” como interlocutor pondrá en primer plano varios niveles en los cuales la traducción se problematiza, incluso a través de la función de la memoria en si misma. La perdida, la melancolía, y la traducción se conciben como fuerzas generativas y productivas, y junto con el funcionamiento de la memoria, como exigencias políticas.

LOGISTICA:

El formato de la conversación: participantes me enseñarán, como interlocutora, un grupo de fotos, y otros objetos guardados de la época de Franco, la Transición y la Movida, para comentar. Estos objetos son abarcados como “evidencia,” para interpretar, o cuestionar, a través de discusión. Cada participante hablará su lengua nativa (español, o inglés), así todos estarán conscientes del proceso de traducción continuamente ocurriendo. Las limitaciones de fluencia entre las lenguas provocará interrupciones al flujo del diálogo, y requieren que cada participante busque superarlas a través de mas información descriptiva, intentar hablar la lengua del otro, o el uso de traductores de web a pesar de susdeficiencias. Las interrupciones serán retenidas en el montaje. Los objetos y fotos no son abarcados con la idea de que la memoria pueda ser provocada, sino como algo para cuestionar, descodificar o traducir. La memoria, transcripción, y montaje son constituidos como actos de traducción.

IMÁGENES: 

El video no muestra caras y se filma en las casas o estudios del participante. Las imágenes son en gran parte de manos y efímeros como libros y otros documentos. No se muestra la cara de nadie, para proteger su identidad.

Conversations and Specters

Ann Burke Daly’s Conversations and Specters is a multi-channel sound and video installation. Through conversations with Spaniards who “came of age” during the explosive urban youth scene of La Movida Madrileña (Madrid punk), the project asks whether a legislated “pact to forget” in the tumultuous wake of Civil War (1936-39), and the “Transition” to Democracy after Dictator Franco’s death in 1975, created a cultural haunting and silencing. The Conversations, which begin loosely scripted, are staged and filmed on video. The installations will be comprised of snippets of sound and image which are layered and stage the struggle to “make sense” of personal and contradictory experiences and the vagaries of memory, perception, and translation. Segments of sound and video are of differing lengths, creating vast permutations of image/sound combinations. The legislated ‘pact of forgetting’ of the Transition Government of 1978 still disallows trials for war crimes. In recent elections in Spain, a younger generation of Spaniards, is calling for a “Second Transition”—a call for another significant cultural shift.

The Conversations are filmed close to the participants, at a low vantage point, in long still camera takes, and create the intimacy of home movies. The images are of gesturing hands, the participant’s homes and studios, and objects from the era which they wish to discuss. Their faces are not shown and the gestures, voice, and surroundings become focal. I speak in English and my partner speaks in Spanish. There are intertitles to roughly inform an English speaking audience of the spoken dialogue.

My position as a cultural outsider, and my limited competence with the Spanish language is a structural component of the project, in which I stage corollaries between difficulties of translation, transcription, interpretation, and the workings of memory and forgetting—and the contradictions involved in the scripting of historical narratives. Through the arc of my practice, I struggle with the desire to believe in documentary methods and documentation — particularly photographs and voice narration — and use these same tools to cast doubt upon veracity— to throw the blurring of fact and fiction into view, and to ask what lies outside of the frame, in off-stage space.

IMAGES

The video shows no faces, and are shot in the homes or studios of the participant. The images are largely of hands and ephemera such as books and other documents. No one’s face is shown, to protect their identity.

What is this catastrophe of memory, this translation of past into present, projected into future?


Comprised of conversational excerpts as video, sound, and photographs, the project investigates the experience of youth during “the Transition”, between the death of Franco to Democracy and the era of Movida Madrileña, the Urban Youth Culture of the early 1980s, sometimes called the Punk of Madrid Spain. Memory, transcription, and editing are all constituted as acts of translation. Loss, the failure of a singular cohesive viewpoint, and the uncertainties and vagaries of translation, memory and perception, are approached here as productive forces —as radically generative. The position of 'cultural outsider' as interlocutor foregrounds ways in which translation is troubled.

Conversations and Specters asks whether a cultural haunting has taken place.

Maquettes and workshopping image for multi-channel audio and video installation. Audio is a separate channel. Sound comes from behind a visitor, as they face double projections. An exhibition would consist of several pairings of projection/audio.Project is ongoing, and has been workshopped once, but not premiered.
