SITE1C

A series of composite photo-montage ‘site portraits’ of former Dictatorship (1939–1975) era prisons in Madrid, Spain. The 18 buildings reverted to their pre-war social function, or similar (convents, schools, municipal buildings) and bear no markings to indicate their former use as prisons and sites of torture and execution. The story of these buildings remains largely unknown. They sit in plain sight within the city center.

For Half-Life | Vida Media, each building site is photographed forensically to produce photographic fragments (specimens) which are pieced together through installation to form a fractured and expansive montage. Photo-fragments are shot performatively by the artist in a single durational session at each site. Daly uses the camera as a prosthesis, creating 200-1000 photographs per site. Daly’s performative action requires physical exertion, and pushes the boundaries of the artist’s physical limits in shooting and installation. Fragments are pinned to the wall as a series of Specimens in each installation. The entire composite "site portrait" is like a giant flayed skin, flattened out, expansive, and stretched on the wall in front of an exhibition audience. Installation visitors are invited to investigate these immersive highly tactile specimen-walls up close with Daly— like detectives at the scene of a crime.
