Restless Language, Restlessly Yours
Performative time-based installation artwork, 2016-2021
by Ann Burke Daly, American Interdisciplinary Artist.
Like other works by Daly, this spatiotemporal piece began with a choreographic idea and script to activate the performative process, incorporating chance. The performance component of the work is completed in one durational session, ending when the artist's ability to stand and walk is exhausted.
Daly looks closely at what is often overlooked and engages an approach both poetic and physical, collecting each image 'fragment' while slowly walking the perimeter of the base of a contested urban landscape structure focusing the camera on the incision point where built structure ruptures and is inserted into ground. The fragment images are collected piece by piece to be printed and installed piece by piece at actual size of one foot square per image, in an approach that merges performative and forensics methods with deferral, poetics, and the fragmentation and slowing down of the speed at which we now experience most visual images.
Installation specifics are variable to site, such as actual spacing and configuration of the photo-fragments. The image composites here are created for web viewing.
The project was supported by The Puffin Foundation with a production grant in 2022.
